Brazilian Formula One driver Felipe Massa headed to his home country Monday after being treated for crash injuries at a hospital in Budapest, Hungary. Massa, who drives for Scuderia Ferrari, was hurt in a high-speed crash during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Pole winner Sebastien Vettel drove his Renault to an easy win Sunday in the Formula One British Grand Prix in Silverstone, England. It was his third career F1 victory. He relinquished the lead one time during his final pit stop and beat Red Bull racing teammate Mark Webber to the checkered flag by 15.188 seconds. British driver Jenson Button strengthened his hold on Formula One racing this year with his sixth 2009 victory in Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix. Button slipped past pole sitter Sebastian Vettel and made it six wins in the seven European grand prix circuit events this season.
Formula One officials in Paris changed the way they determine a driving champion, letting race victories, rather than a points competition, choose the winner. The International Automobile Federation's World Motor Sport Council made the change Tuesday, scrapping a system in which the driving title was decided by points awarded on a sliding scale according to race finish. Now, the overall champion will be the racer who wins the most grand prix, the council said.
