Thanks to a unique "ballistic study" that combines data from ESO's Very Large Telescope and NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, astronomers have now solved a long-standing mystery of the Milky Way's particle accelerators. They show in a paper published today on Science Express that cosmic rays from our galaxy are very efficiently accelerated in the remnants of exploded stars. During the Apollo flights astronauts reported seeing odd flashes of light, visible even with their eyes closed. We have...

Scientists have developed a three-dimensional model of a virus that causes SARS, which they believe will assist future efforts to battle the disease. Dutch researchers created the model using a hepatitis coronavirus from mice, they reported in the Jan. 13 issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "I think we can translate what we found for this virus to the SARS virus," Berend Jan Bosch, a virologist at Utrecht University who worked on the study, told Reuters. "If...

Often experiments are needed to make scientific progress, but sometimes the answers lie in data already collected, requiring new analysis tools to unlock the secrets. This applies to infectious disease transmission, main topic of a recent workshop organised by the European Science Foundation (ESF), which called for development of new mathematical and statistical tools capable of probing deeper into existing databases relating to human contact and pathogens. "One of the most exciting...

Researchers from the United States and the Netherlands report that several formations on Mars indicate incidents of rapid release of water from the planet's interior.Mars has many basins that contain formations that look like fans. A few of these fans, only about 10, have steps down into the basin. Since scientists first reported this feature three years ago, there has been no clear consensus on how they formed. So, following an example of a project they had created for high school students,...
