Best Weather Forecasting Models Evaluated By Researchers
2014-02-07 13:14:49

University of Iowa Study focused on September 2013 Colorado floods Two University of Iowa researchers recently tested the ability of the world’s most advanced weather forecasting models to predict the Sept. 9-16, 2013 extreme rainfall that caused severe flooding in Boulder, Colo. The results, published in the December 2013 issue of the journal Geophysical Research Letters, indicated the forecasting models generally performed well, but also left room for improvement. David Lavers...

National Weather Service Getting Supercomputer Upgrade
2013-05-17 13:39:59

Peter Suciu for redOrbit.com — Your Universe Online The weather remains one of those things in life that can´t actually be changed, but being able to predict and track weather is the next best thing. By being able to improve forecasting and storm tracking abilities are just two ways that the United States National Weather Service (NWS) can help better protect the country from severe weather. The U.S. economy remains vulnerable to severe weather events, which can cost...

A new NASA-funded prototype system developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) of Boulder, Colo., now is providing weather forecasts that can help flights avoid major storms as they travel over remote ocean regions. The eight-hour forecasts of potentially dangerous atmospheric conditions are designed for pilots, air traffic controllers and others involved in transoceanic flights. The NCAR-based system combines satellite data and computer weather models to produce maps...

Weather Pack For July 30, 2012
2012-08-01 12:22:59

Weather Pack is our way to envision what is happening with the weather and create a weather forecast for a certain area of the United States. Today’s focus is on Southwest Mississippi along the Mississippi River. On the left side we have a Skew-T which is used to help us determine what is happening in the upper levels at our forecast location. On the right side is our morning satellite image; both of these features are important to creating an accurate forecast. The Skew-T will show...

Surface Weather Map Features for July 5, 2012
2012-07-05 10:00:03

The morning weather map for July 5, shows us the current surface pressure readings. Surface Pressure is very important from a meteorological stand point. We use this to help us identify where our surface pressure centers are just like you see above. Our Low pressure area is over Northeast Colorado and also the High pressure over the Ontario area. Surface pressure is taken hourly from the stations and they are also mostly done on a 24hr basis, however some places will only submit their...

Weather Map Identification

It is very important to understand what you are looking at when working with weather maps. In the image above we are looking at surface wind barbs. Surface wind barbs help us to identify which direction the wind is blowing and also the speed of the wind. If we look in the Northern Gulf of Mexico just to the south of Mississippi we see a wind barb in blue. This wind barb is from the East and it has two full wind barbs which tells us the wind is from the East at 20kts. If you look along...

Surface Weather Map Features
2012-07-16 14:20:04

Looking at the weather map above we can see that we have three and four digit numbers on the map. These numbers are known as Sea Level Pressure. They are recorded in MB. Looking at the Northern part of South Dakota we see a number at 995mb while over parts of Maine we see the number closer to 1020mb. So we would say that high pressure is over Maine, while low pressure is over the Dakota’s as our MB numbers show. A surface pressure map can be very useful to a weather forecaster in many...
