Ken Weber told the Montreal Gazette his daughter Kyla of Calgary, Canada, is engaged to marry U.S. film actor Vince Vaughn. However, People magazine said Vaughn's publicist declined to comment on the status of his relationship with Kyla Weber, a 29-year-old real-estate agent. By David Germain LOS ANGELES -- In comedy, Hollywood has learned that raunch sells. Studios prefer their funny flicks in the benign PG-13 mold, a rating that keeps the audience broad to fill as many seats as possible. More and more, however, they are taking chances on R- rated comedies that ratchet up the rawness, allowing the "Sex and the City" gal pals to strut their stuff, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly to expose body parts in "Step Brothers," or Tom Cruise to swear like a sailor....

No offer has been made to the "Wedding Crashers" star because Columbia Pictures is fine-tuning the film's budget, but the helmer has had discussions with Vaughn about filling the role of the FBI's John O'Neill. By Dean Goodman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Female moviegoers fell for the charm of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," propelling the comedy to the top of the North American box office in its first weekend of release, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday. Women also accounted for a majority of attendees at the No. 2 film, the suspense movie "Red Eye," marking the second consecutive weekend that the top two films appealed to a distaff crowd -- a paradoxical turn given that the studios...

By Nicole Sperling LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - As Hollywood's summer coasts to its Labor Day close, box office expectations tend to diminish along with summer work hours. But this weekend, four films will try to overcome the end-of-summer malaise with fresh offerings to four distinct demographics. The likely winner of the frame is "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," which should top the $20 million mark for the three-day period. Hot on the heels of "Wedding Crashers," the Universal...

By Nicole Sperling LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Teenagers and nostalgic filmgoers will ensure a No. 1 bow at the box office for "The Dukes of Hazzard," the only new wide release this weekend. Industry sources are putting the opening gross for the film version of the popular '70s show in the $25 million-$30 million range. Most have said that if the market weren't in its depressed state, it would likely gross more than $30 million. Current champ "Wedding Crashers" again should be able...

By Nicole Sperling LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - After two weeks as the box office bridesmaid, "Wedding Crashers" is on track to take over the lead this weekend, while the new action-adventure film "Stealth" might have trouble taking off. As with last weekend's bomb, "The Island," which opened to a dismal $12.4 million, Sony's "Stealth" has an innocuous title, a well-known director (Rob Cohen of "XXX"), and a cast that doesn't include guaranteed box office draws (Jamie Foxx, Josh...

By Chris Marlowe LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Not just anyone can star in a movie with Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn and Christopher Walken, but New Line has developed an egalitarian trailer for "Wedding Crashers," the No. 2 movie at the box office last weekend with estimated ticket sales of $32.2 million. A nifty feature on the movie's official site (http://www.weddingcrashersmovie.com) lets fans put themselves in the action and on the credits. Clicking on "Trailer Crashers" walks users...

Word of the Day
callithump
  • A somewhat riotous parade, accompanied with the blowing of tin horns, and other discordant noises; also, a burlesque serenade; a charivari.
'Callithump' is a back-formation of 'callithumpian,' a 'fanciful formation' according to the Oxford English Dictionary. However, the English Dialect Dictionary, says 'Gallithumpians' is a Dorset and Devon word from the 1790s that refers to 'a society of radical social reformers' or 'noisy disturbers of elections and meetings.'
