Earthquake Test Checks Out Building Vulnerability
A full scale, damaged building, repaired using a technique developed at the University of Sheffield, is tested on the AZALEE shaking table at the CEA/EMSI laboratory in Saclay (France). The technique involves applying a building ‘belt’ using post-tensioned metal straps. The researchers were unable to make the building fail during a major earthquake similar in scale to the magnitude 7 Haiti earthquake at the epicentre and stopped the test at that point.
