Microbes Found Speciating In Russian Hot Spring

Despite still being in close proximity to one another in an acidic, boiling habitat of a hot spring in Kamchatka, Russia, two groups of genetically indistinguishable microbes parted ways and began evolving into different species and even exchanged genes from time to time. The research was conducted on microbes found in a single geothermal hot spring — very much like this one in Yellowstone National Park.  Credit: Rachel Whitaker
