How to Measure Your Penis Size Properly and Why It’s Important

As men normally view their penis from above, it may appear smaller when compared to other guys.

This can easily make a man feel self-conscious, as many men tie the size of their penis to their sexual power. However, many of these self-image problems are based on mistaken beliefs. For example, studies have shown that over 75% of women find the length of the male sexual organ unimportant.

But outside of these worries, measuring your penis can be important for your sexual health. It should come as no surprise that an incorrectly fitted condom is uncomfortable and possibly dangerous. Wearing a condom can help prevent pregnancy and protect against STDs, but only if you choose the right size.

To ensure you use condoms that aren’t too tight or too loose, it’s important to know how to measure your penis size properly. This article will give you all the information you need to get the numbers right.

Why Measure Your Penis?

It may seem like an act of self-indulgence, but there are some good reasons why you should take the time to measure your penis.

Get the Correct Size Condom

Some people dislike using condoms due to the way they feel. But much of this discomfort comes from using the incorrect size. By correctly measuring your penis, you will know the perfect size to buy, which can have a huge effect on how a condom feels and performs.

You’re Considering Surgery

Men who are worried that their penis is too small may consider enlargement surgery. This decision should not be taken lightly, as operations to increase penis size can be dangerous. While complications might be rare, side effects of penis enlargement surgery include stroke, a heart attack, or even death.

Is My Penis Normal?

While there’s little reason to compare yourself to other men, some guys want to know how they measure up. But as most men embellish the size of their penis (or don’t know how to measure it properly), accurate data can be difficult to find.

In an attempt to identify the average penis size, a 2014 study collated data from multiple sources across the world. Their findings showed the following:

  • The average length of a flaccid penis was reported as 9.16cm (3.6”) while the average erect penis length is 13.12cm (5.16”).
  • The average girth or circumference of a flaccid penis is 9.31cm (3.66”) and the erect girth average was found to be 11.66cm (4.59”).

How to Measure Your Penis Size Properly

If you need to measure your penis, it’s important to know how to do it properly.

To get an accurate result, you will need to start with an erect penis. It’s also best to use a flexible measuring tape, especially to measure the girth. If you don’t have a tailor’s tape, find a piece of string or fabric that won’t stretch and then use a ruler to measure the fabric.

Measuring Length

To measure the length of your penis, place the start of the measuring tape at the base of your penis where it attaches to your body. Some men measure from the base of the scrotum which may give them an extra inch but will also result in an incorrect measurement.

Push the tape into the skin towards the pelvic bone and then draw it up to the tip of the erect shaft. This measurement is the length.

Measuring Girth

Girth refers to the circumference or thickness of the penis. Wrap the tape around the thickest part of the penis (typically the base of the shaft) and note where the two ends meet. This is the figure for your girth.

If you’re using string or fabric to measure, mark where the two ends meet so you can get an accurate figure from your ruler.

What About Width?

While girth is the measurement of penis circumference, many condoms are sold with a width measurement instead. To get this figure, you will need to do some easy math.

The constant pi is the ratio of circumference to diameter (which for our purposes is the width), so you can use the same constant to work out the width measurement. To do this, simply divide the girth by 3.14. Using the above averages, we can work out the average width of a flaccid penis to be 2.96cm (1.16”), while erect penis width is 3.71cm (1.46”).

Can Technology Help?

As the saying goes, ‘there’s an app for that’, and this is certainly the case for measuring your penis. Many apps are now available that offer an easy way to measure your member.

The recent updates to Apple’s iOS included a built-in measure app, and using this to measure your penis seems easy and convenient. However, it’s likely to be less accurate than taking the measurements manually.

What Affects Penis Size?

As with most things related to our bodies, the size of your penis is typically determined at birth. While most men fall within the average size range, around 0.6% of males worldwide are born with a micropenis.

Caused by genetic or hormonal abnormalities, a micropenis is most often the result of fetal testosterone deficiency. Generally treated in infancy, doctors recommend a short course of testosterone to treat the condition. Should this fail, more drastic options like surgery may be considered.

When to Seek Help

For many men, the size of their penis directly relates to their self-confidence. If you’re worried about the size of your penis, speak to your doctor or healthcare provider. They may be able to allay your worries or let you know what options are available to you.

Measure Up

Now that you know how to measure your penis size properly, grab the tape measure and take down your figures. This will ensure that you get the right size condoms but it will also help you learn more about your body.

Whether you fall in the average range or not, it’s important to remember that everyone is different. Penis size has little to do with masculinity. But if you have concerns about your penis or its function, speak with your doctor about your personal situation.
