Police use Taser on fake cougar
Posted on: Monday, 18 May 2009, 15:11 CDT
Police in Michigan responding to a report of a cougar on the loose said they ended up shooting a large toy cat with a Taser stun gun.
Warren police said the 911 caller said a huge
animal resembling a 150-pound cat
was spotted in an old cement drainpipe in Bates Park and 10 officers were sent to the scene, WDIV-TV, Detroit, reported Monday.
The officers saw the outline of the animal in the pipe and shot it with the Taser -- only to discover it was a large toy cougar.
Police Commissioner William Dwyer said investigators believe the incident, which cost the department $1,000 in wasted police hours from responding to the scene and filling out paperwork, was a prank.
Dwyer said the prankster could face 90 days probation and fines equivalent to the wasted police money if caught.

Posted by pizzedmyselflaughing on 05/27/2009, 18:17 I can't believe they didn't have backup from Sterling Hts, Fraser, and Clinton Twp; everyone that's been trying to capture this elusive "Ghetto Cougar" for the 35+ years that I've lived here. Chased him through Freedom Hill park once with heliocopters and a SWAT team, they did. Wonder how much THAT cost??? |

Posted by a n on 05/20/2009, 00:28 Seems to me that the only the thing the 'prankster' should be charged with is littering. Any decent judge would demand proof that whoever placed the toy there did it in order to make somebody believe it was a real animal. How much more money are the cops going to waste trying to figure out who to charge? |

Posted by Ross G. on 05/19/2009, 16:03 Where was animal control or workers from the local Zoo when this call went in? And I would think a tranquilizer rifle would have been a more appropriate, though just as ineffective, response. |

Posted by anonymous on 05/19/2009, 11:37 yeah, in a lot of states you don't need anything more than a high school diploma to become a law enforcement officer, and couple that with low pay (15-20K in detroit, for instance) for a starting officer, it's not a good scene. That being said, I find the statement at the bottom amusing, saying that whoever put the stuffed animal there could be held responsible. Responsible because your officers didn't properly visually identify a target before shooting it? lulz@pigs |

Posted by LOL on 05/19/2009, 10:40 our boys in blue at their best.. I applaud the prankster(s). how dumb do you have to be to realize it\'s A STUFFED toy. they\'ll give anyone a badge these day. You know, maybe I will apply to be a police officer. you get away with murder (literally), you can shoot stuffed animals, and you can arrest people for no apparent reason other than you\'ve had a bad day. |
