Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN), a leading supplier of speech solutions, is today announcing the release of Nuance’s Dictaphone® Healthcare Division’s Veriphy-Ready HL7 Integration Server (VIS). VIS will automate the closed-loop communication process for critical patient findings by allowing Vocada Veriphy, Dictaphone’s market-leading solution for critical test result management (CTRM), to communicate directly with internal diagnostic systems and enterprise wide clinical information systems.
Vocada Veriphy is currently the only end-to-end enterprise solution for communicating critical test results from hospital diagnostic departments to ordering clinicians, and has been proven in deployments at more than 150 hospitals nationwide. In the wake of the recently announced Veriphy 2.0, Dictaphone built VIS as a Windows-based application integration platform, based on the most widely deployed HL7 core engine on the market. Features include:
Seamless integration with internal systems, such as picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), radiology information systems (RIS), laboratory information systems (LIS), electronic medical records (EMR) and hospital information systems (HIS)
Automated communication of critical test results from any internal diagnostic system to the ordering physician
Automated documentation of the critical test result’s distribution, receipt and verification within any internal diagnostic system
The ability to automatically populate the patient record in internal systems such as LIS, RIS and EMRs with the Veriphy communications audit trail
“Veriphy facilitates a process for not just sending out critical patient finding alerts, but for coding messages based on content, priority and appropriate follow up,” said Steven Defossez M.D., medical director of North Shore Magnetic Imaging Center in Peabody, Massachusetts. “The value of having an effective, consistent way of communicating patient information between providers is essential for patient safety and provider productivity. CTRM has allowed us to automate an otherwise unstructured, time-intensive process, improve patient care and reduce malpractice risk with its auditable trail of what happened, when. The ability to share Veriphy’s audit trail across multiple systems through the VIS product is an extension that will help more hospitals get on board with best practices in clinical communications.”
VIS will make it easier for healthcare organizations to achieve best practices in clinical communication–a task that has challenged many. In 2006, nearly two-thirds of hospitals surveyed by The Joint Commission failed to meet the accreditation requirement for communication of critical test results. With VIS, hospitals can improve the effectiveness of communication among caregivers to advance patient safety, meet the guidelines of The Joint Commission and overcome integration hurdles associated with legacy information systems.
“The communication of critical test results amongst caregivers can mean the difference between a patient’s life or death; and as recognized by The Joint Commission, a manual process is inefficient and prone to errors. Veriphy provides a consistent and accountable way to share, track and document high-priority patient information,” said Peter White, general manager, Veriphy, in the Dictaphone Healthcare Division at Nuance. “With our recent announcement of Veriphy 2.0, we expanded the solution’s capability to better meet the needs of hospital administrators and clinicians. With VIS, we’re removing barriers so all hospitals and labs can effectively manage their critical test results for improved patient safety and increased provider productivity without worrying about integration roadblocks.”
