BCP Veterinary Pharmacy’s Transdermal Gels Are Easy Way to Medicate Pets

HOUSTON, June 6 /PRNewswire/ — Studies show that owning a pet reduces our stress level, lowers our blood pressure, and can increase our life expectancy. But what happens when a beloved pet is diagnosed with an illness that requires ongoing medication?

To alleviate the stress and difficulty associated with medicating animals, BCP Veterinary Pharmacy offers a number of medications in the form of a transdermal gel, which is simply rubbed into the pet’s inner ear where it is absorbed into the bloodstream. Transdermal gels come in prefilled syringes to make it easy to dispense the proper dosage.

“Transdermal gels are an important alternative to oral therapy,” said Jennifer Gimon, registered pharmacist and founder of BCP Veterinary Pharmacy. “They can make a major difference by empowering people to keep pace with their pets’ daily medicine regimen. Our mission is to make life easier for pet owners and to keep their pets living longer, healthier lives.”

“We make transdermal gels for pets that are suffering from chronic ailments such as heart disease, high blood pressure, inflammatory bowel disease, urinary incontinence and hyperthyroidism,” Gimon said. “We fill a tremendous number of prescriptions for transdermal versions of antibiotics, steroids, antihistamines and appetite stimulants.”

BCP Veterinary Pharmacy’s most popular transdermal gels include cisapride, amitriptyline, prednisone, prednisolone, methimazole, enrofloxacin, clomipramine, diltiazem, chlorpheniramine, diphenhyrdamine, metronidazole, amlodipine and phenylpropanolamine.

The effectiveness of the transdermal gel form of methimazole for treatment of 16 cats with hyperthyroidism was evaluated in a study reported in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding (Vol.6 No. 5, September/October 2002). The results indicate that transdermal methimazole is effective in reducing the serum T4 level in hyperthyroid cats. A lack of adverse side effects, an increase in satisfaction among pet owners and an improved ability to administer the medication were among the benefits cited.

A Full Fellow with the American College of Apothecaries and cofounder of the American College of Veterinary Pharmacies, Gimon founded BCP Veterinary Pharmacy in 1994 in Houston, Texas.
